Temperatures are expected to drop this weekend and stay below freezing from Sunday to Wednesday. Please have an emergency plan and take precautions to prevent pipes from bursting. Please prepare your home for the extreme cold by protecting water pipes, external spigots, and any possible sprinkler systems. Water pipes can burst any time temperatures are below freezing. A burst water pipe or water heater is an emergency and could pose a danger of flooding your home.

A few prevention measures:

  • Set your heat on 68 degrees.
  • Open ALL cabinet doors under the sinks in your kitchen and bathrooms to allow heated air to circulate around the water pipes.
  • Allow faucets to drip both hot and cold water, a minimal flow could help prevent a broken pipe
  • Cover exterior hose spigots with insulated covers (available at hardware stores) or with towels, clothes, etc. if no spigot covers are available

What to do if you have a broken pipe:

  • Know where your main water shut off valve is. If your pipes freeze, turn off the main valve, or if you can't, call the MLGW emergency line at  901.528.4465 to have them help you.
  • If you suspect your pipes are frozen, please turn your faucet on slightly to relieve the pressure when the pipes start to thaw.
  • Always leave a key with a neighbor or someone that can get into your home in extreme weather conditions if you are not at home. Having access to homes where pipes are broken or affected by broken pipes is extremely important.

Power outages:

  • Visit MLGW’s Outage Center at mlgw.com/outagecenter for more information on reporting and tracking outages as well as a preparedness guide for customers with additional tips and general information to get ready for any weather emergency.
  • In the event of power outages, never leave candles or fires in fireplaces unattended. Be sure your phones and all devices are fully charged and that you have flashlights, blankets and candles that are easily accessible.
  • Make sure all vehicle gas tanks are full

If there is Snow or ice:

Please be careful entering and exiting your home to avoid slipping and falling. It is best to stay at home if possible. It is not safe to keep pets outside during these extremely cold temps.
